Here is an easy way to add to the festive spirit at the end of the year, while contributing to the overall ambiance in the other 11 months!
On advice from our gerontologist and other dementia advisors, we do not continue the tree to its full length at the bottom of the wall. This may be obvious to care providers in-home, but the main reason is to discourage certain residents, who in their younger days working in the “great outdoors”, may have “relieved themselves” at or near a tree or other greenery. This is true of all of our murals in care homes that don’t include grass or shrubs at this lower level.
The lower fence is optional of course, since our clients typically have a wide variety of wall types or coverings on their lower walls for example, block walls, wallpaper, acrovyn (a type of hard textured material used for wall protection) to name a few. The tree itself has a blue sky background for maximum “pop” and is designed for placement above the chair rail.
Finally - the ornaments. These are decidedly retro! Residents living with a form of dementia generally relate better to situations and items from their younger days. Many of these ornaments harken back to earlier days - on purpose. They will be better recognized by the residents in care and enjoyed by the care staff as a fun retro element.
Tree measures from 60 - 72 inches wide depending on clients available space and 90 inches high (for full length wall height including fence) or 60 inches high (just tree with sky background above chair rail).
