Single Exit, Office and Custodian Doors

Whether a main exit, a stairwell door, a custodian’s closet, or administrative office door, there are areas that are inaccessible to residents in memory care. This can lead to frustration, confusion and upset for these residents and more work for already busy staff. Our door wraps provide a solution - both in disguising that door and bringing a home like feeling to the environment.

Creative Art Co have wrapped the doors of our Memory Care Community and we have noticed a significant reduction of residents lingering at the doors wanting to leave.

FAQs

How do I start the process?

  1. Contact your fire safety officer/marshal who will want to know more about any vinyl material to be applied to an exit door. Send them this link:

    http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/864473O/flammability-test-report-ij180c-10.pdf

The flame spread rating is very low (Class 1A, 0 - 25), but You must have their permission before proceeding to step two…

  2. Send us two pictures - one of your door and another further back to include the surroundings as they will influence our design ideas.

Costs vary as there are never two doors the same and they require different treatments depending on size, windows, push bars etc.

How do I choose the best wrap image?

We can help you with this as sometimes the hardware on the door (closer boxes), windows, push bar dictates which image will work best with it. Other than this, a “bookcase” or “cabinet” image that works well with your Care Home’s colour scheme (chair rails, flooring and furniture) is usually the way to go!

Why are your exit diversion images Cabinets and bookcases?

We use the cabinet/bookcase imagery following guidance from a gerontologist and other experts in the field of dementia. The objective is to create the “look and feel” of home that will not be an attraction to a resident, especially to those who are actively “exit-seeking”. In addition, many doors are recessed (not even with the adjacent walls) thus lending themselves convincingly to the look of a “cabinet in an alcove”.

Why not use other home features or even a full length landscape mural?

In the 10 years we have worked in Memory Care environments, we have learned many things, both from the experts and from Care Home staff. When artists have painted fireplaces on exit doors, staff have seen residents drag chairs over to the area to enjoy it! (the opposite of what is wanted by the home). Painting tables and chairs on a door is often dangerous (residents may try to place a drink on the table, or worse… sit on an image of a chair and suffer a fall). Full length landscapes can cause frustration to a resident who cannot enter into the scene and the gentlemen residents have been known to “relieve themselves” on greenery that is below waist level.

Won’t our residents want to reach for books in the bookcase?

Most residents in our experience are not very interested in accessing a book. Many of our books are untitled and the ones that are look like hard work to read! We put a realistic looking window over the books indicates that the objects are behind glass. If a care home has several book-loving residents, they can ask us for a window option that mutes the appearance of the contents.

Do your wraps work for all types of doors?

While we can overcome most obstacles on doors to achieve a convincing door disguise, the door must be FLAT ie. not panelled with recesses. If your door has raised moldings that can be removed to make the door flat, that is O.K.

How strong are the wraps?

Our wraps are created using a top quality 3M self-adhesive vinyl (the same material you see on the sides of trucks). We add a special “no-glare” laminate for extra protection and easy cleaning. In addition, when we install, we always add a 12” tall piece of clear polycarbonate as a buffer against carts, wheelchairs and walkers and recommend this strongly to our self-installing clients.

Will we still be able to see through the windows on the doors once it is wrapped?

Our window treatments will show the cabinet image from inside, while maintaining adequate visibility from the other side, but the strongest light must be on the interior where the disguise is required, in order to be most effective.

Can we have a wrap on our glass door(s) to the outside of the building?

This will not work as the light from the outside will overpower the image on the inside and will therefore defeat the purpose. Our wraps for doors with windows are designed to work on interior doors of the building.

Why don’t I see prices?

Pricing is dependent on several aspects. The amount of design time required, quantities and the overall size of the project all have an influence. Also your location in relation to ours here in Southern Ontario and whether we install, or we ship to you for local installation.
