Exit Diversion Artwork

Exit diversion artwork is an invaluable tool for Memory Care communities in building a homelike environment and to dissuade residents from lingering by an exit door. In fact, just the appearance of a commercial or hospital-looking exit door, can be the catalyst to exit-seeking behaviour.

Our clients inform us that our door wraps work, even if not for every resident (as there are many types and stages of dementia as well as individual responses). The result is that the environment is calmed and improved, saving residents unnecessary upset and saving staff valuable time in redirecting.

“Our administrator is so impressed by the Cottage B painting and staff is reporting that it is effective in keeping residents from the doorway, he has told me to go ahead with Cottage C.”

“Brian and Karen” of Creative Art Co are wonderful to work with. The art work they created for our front door has reduced the frequency of wandering residents wanting to exit seek and has been the talk of the home from visitors and families because of the sheer beauty of the display.”

In Harmony with a home environment

An industrial or institutional looking door will always indicate to a resident in care that they are not at home.

Choosing the right door cover that blends with decor is ideal for a seamless environmental enhancement that also dissuades many residents from lingering at an exit door.

Before considering this or any treatment, always be sure to first get fire safety officer’s approval (see FAQs below for more info)

Will your Door be suitable for a wrap treatment?

If your door is molded with raised and recessed areas, it is not suitable for our wrap treatments. If your door has moldings that can be removed to make the door perfectly flat - this can work!

FAQs

How do I start the process?

  1. Contact your fire safety officer/marshal who will want to know more about the vinyl material that will be applied to the door. Send them this link:

    http://multimedia.3m.com/mws/media/864473O/flammability-test-report-ij180c-10.pdf

The flame spread rating is very low (Class 1A, 0 - 25), but You must have their permission before proceeding to step two.

  2. Send us two pictures - one of your door and another further back taking in the door and area around it with measurements including the size of the glass in windows.

Costs vary as there are never two doors the same and they require different treatments depending on size, windows, push bars etc.

How do I choose the right style of door?

We can help you with this as sometimes the hardware on the door (closer boxes), windows, push bar dictates which image will work best with it. Other than this, a “bookcase” or “cabinet” image that works well with your Care Home’s colour scheme (chair rails, flooring and furniture) is usually the way to go!

Do your wraps work for all doors?

While we can overcome most obstacles on doors to achieve a convincing door disguise, the door must be FLAT ie. not panelled with recesses. If your door has raised moldings that can be removed to make the door flat, that is O.K.

How strong are the wraps?

Our wraps are created using a top quality 3M self-adhesive vinyl (the same material you see on the sides of trucks). We add a special “no-glare” laminate for extra protection and easy cleaning. In addition, we we install, we always add a 12” tall piece of clear polycarbonate as a buffer against carts, wheelchairs and walkers and recommend this strongly to our self-installing clients.

Why don’t I see prices?

Pricing is dependent on several aspects. The amount of design time required, quantities and the overall size of the project all have an influence. Also your location in relation to ours here in Southern Ontario and whether we install, or we ship to you for local installation.

Already have fire safety officer’s approval? (see FAQs)

How do I prepare the door for the wrap?

Be sure to scrape the door to remove any bumps or scraps of tape. Giving the door a good clean to remove greasy patches (from many hands) will ensure that your wrap sticks strongly to the door surface. Preparation is everything!

One of the best ways to assist our Exit Diversion (door disguise) wraps is to paint the frame and 10 inches of door’s perimeter in the wall colour. Make sure you let this dry for a few days before applying the wrap material.

Can we have a wrap on our glass door(s) to the outside of the building?

This will not work as the light from the outside will overpower the image on the inside and will therefore defeat the purpose. Our wraps for doors with windows are designed to work on interior doors of the building.
